Question
what is meditation in buddhism??
its for homework and i have no idea...

Answer
Sophie!!
should i be doing your homework for you:-)?

meditation is an english word which has perhaps wrongly
been used to describe what Buddhists do.

The Sanskrit word bhavana is probably what we are translating.
A better translation would be cultivation.

Buddhists seek to find out the true nature of their minds,
and the worlds. It is a journey to find out who we really
are, and what is really at the heart of the world.
By completing this journey, it is thought that we will
be liberated from the endless cycle of rebirth, samsara.

The tool for taking this journey is meditation. Meditation
is not only sitting on a cushion, but it is also cultivating
the real mind, the awakened mind in all moments of the day.

Hope this helps
