Buddhists/Buddhist Monk healthcare considerations

Question
Dear Sir,
I am an RN in a rehabilitation hospital.  Today we received a Buddhist monk as a patient.  He does not speak English, but is able to understand some.  I am unfamiliar with religious beliefs relating to the actual physical care of this gentleman, and I would deeply regret inadvertently causing him discomfort or upset while he is in the care of our facility.  Most of our staff is female, but we are trying to make accommodations to respect the Buddhist religion.  If you could offer some advice about the best way to provide care without causing spiritual disturbances or conflicts, it would be very greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time and any assistance you can offer.
Sincerely,
Cari

Answer
Hi Cari,

Thanks for asking me.

Buddhist monks are a peculiar lot.  They come in different shapes and sizes.  I am talking about their perculiarities!!  And also depending on which buddhist traditions they belong.  Personally, I too am always very uncomfortable when with them!  So I cannot generalize and provide assumptions.

The best approach is to communicate with his people as to what is required of you to respect his status and not to create any embarrassment.  I suppose you can also ask his permission first in simple English before you do anything to him.

(Under normal circumstances females should avoid touching a Buddhist monk.  In this instance, my personal opinion is that you are performing an invaluable service to him, and it should be appreciated.  If I were a monk, I will thank you for helping me in whatever way you deem fit!)

Hope this helps.
