Question
Why exactly did Buddha reject the caste system?

Answer
Dear Kacy,
The caste system indicates that there is a difference in people, that some are higher than others and some are untouchable.  In Buddhism we are all expressions of nature and not higher or lower than anyone else.  No one is holier or more awakened than another.  Each one of us has the same Buddha nature without qualifications.  This is why things like rank, status or a caste system are incompatible with Buddhism.

Take care,

I can answer questions dealing with Taoist philosophy and Zen and not the historicity and religion of Buddhism and its different schools. I studied under Dr. Richard DeMartino and Masao Abe of the Kyoto School of Zen.
