Question
How would one know if they are a bodhisatva?

Answer
Terri
Bodhisattva has a number of meanings in Buddhism.

In the Theravada tradition the previous lives of Sakyamuni Buddha given in the Jataka tales
he is refered to as a bodhisattva.

In the Mahayana traditions the great Bodhisattvas have trained for
countless life times and have untold abilities. The sutra of the
Flower Ornament gives details of their lives and abilities. Even
the lowest Bodhisattvas have amazing abilities. These are beyond
human abilities in this ordinary world. Ordinary beings, you and me
are like ants compared to these beings. The great Sutras read like
some science fiction of some far off race. The Bodhisattvas are said
to work tirelessly and compassionately for beings.

There is a third style of Bodhisattva within the Mahayana. These are ordinary people
such as you and me who can take a vow to work tirelessly to help
beings. This is said to have enormous benefit and set us on a path
towards enlightenment . It is a slow path and might take countless
lifetimes. But the wish changes the orientation of our lives to
compassion. Most Mayahana Buddhist groups could give you details
of this - if it interests you.

Hope this helps
