Answer
Hi David,
I find it hard to be sure what you are saying. In Buddhism, "nirvana" is the end of all ignorance, craving and aversion. "Enlightenment" is a bit trickier, but generally refers to full Buddhahood. I presume that you are not saying that you have reached those stages - are you?

What you have described, on the other hand, sounds more like what we call "nyam", which roughly means "experience". If you practice meditation seriously (or it can happen spontaneously, depending on the condition of your nervous system) various experiences arise - insights into the nature of things, bliss, spaciousness, visions of Buddha-lands or other places. Mostly they are pleasant, but they can be nasty too, like the "bad trip" that people sometimes report from acid. The teachings are very clear that these "nyams" are encouraging, but temporary. They are a sign that something is happening, but in themselves they don't usually mean very much.

I'm also not very clear about what your question actually is - can you put it into slightly different words?

All the best

Expertise

I have practiced and studied Tibetan Buddhism in the Kagyu and Nyingma traditions since the early 1970s, and have a good knowledge of theory, history and of the struggles of trying to practice the teachings, including meditation, while leading a normal, modern life. I am also available to provide background information for journalists.

Experience

I have been a practitioner since the early 1970s; have run a small Buddhist centre in the English Midlands and was vice-president of Kagyu Benchen Ling e.V. in Germany, for whom I managed three large Buddhist summer-camps. More importantly, I maintain a habit of personal practice. I am the "owner" of the Kagyu list at Yahoo.

Education/Credentials
My first degree was an M.A. from Oxford. I later obtained a Master of Philosophy degree for a research thesis in "Initiation in Tibetan Buddhism" from Leicester University. I also have engineering and educational qualifications.
