Question
could a mother with dependent children (or any parent for that matter) permanently enter a monastery/Buddhist retreat, and be acting according to Buddhist beliefs of right action etc?

Answer
Hi Hugh,

Thank you for asking me.

As you put it : "dependent children"; this means the children still depend on the mother for survival/guidance/maternal love and so on.  I think it would be very irresponsible for the mother to leave her dependent children and "permanently enter a monastery/Buddhist retreat".  It is definitely not "be acting according to Buddhist beliefs of right action etc".

Take care.

Justin Choo
