Question
What does he mean when he says "A gentleman can see a question from all sides without bias. The small man is biased and can see a question only from one side.

or

A gentleman takes as much trouble to discover what is right as lesser men take to discover what will pay

Answer
If you hold ideas and opinions, you only see one side. If you put down all your ideas and opinions, then you see all sides.

If you make I/my/me, then you're troubled by what you'll pay. If you put down I/my/me, then you can determine what's right (i.e., what's beneficial to everyone, not just myself).
