About Alex Wilding
Expertise
I have practiced and studied Tibetan Buddhism in the Kagyu and Nyingma traditions since the early 1970s, and have a good knowledge of theory, history and of the struggles of trying to practice the teachings, including meditation, while leading a normal, modern life. I am also available to provide background information for journalists.

Experience
I have been a practitioner since the early 1970s; have run a small Buddhist centre in the English Midlands and was vice-president of Kagyu Benchen Ling e.V. in Germany, for whom I managed three large Buddhist summer-camps. More importantly, I maintain a habit of personal practice. I am the "owner" of the Kagyu list at Yahoo.

Education/Credentials
My first degree was an M.A. from Oxford. I later obtained a Master of Philosophy degree for a research thesis in "Initiation in Tibetan Buddhism" from Leicester University. I also have engineering and educational qualifications.

Buddhists - a killer who became buddhist in jail

Expert: Alex Wilding - 9/13/2009

Question
Hi,
I’m a french cartoonist and I have a particular question :
I’m looking for the name of an american prisoner (who was put in jail for criminals acts) who has discovered Bouddhism in jail and have become bouddhist himself. He also wrote a novel about his experience. Matthieu Ricard speaks about that in his book “The monk and the philosoph” but the name is not specified.

Do you know that story? The name of that person?

Thanks a lot for your answer.
And I’m sorry for my English.

F.C.

Answer
Dear Fred,
Sorry, I can't help. Generally the prison Buddhist "chaplaincy" is quite active, and people do often "find religion" in jail, so your searches will have to focus on the novel. Does MR say it was published, or was it just written?

> And I’m sorry for my English.
No problem!

Sorry again, and good luck
