Question
Can you help me understand the Buddhist beliefs regarding the following areas of environmental ethics?

1. Land development in regards to deforestation and loss of habitats?

2. Agricultural chemicals in regards to their use in crops and the ecosystem?

3. The usage of genetically engineered foods and food additives?

4. The waste and use of natural resources in the consumerism of the United States?

Answer
Hi Lynn,

Your questions are not on Buddhism.   Since you asked, this is my personal opinion.

1. Land development in regards to deforestation and loss of habitats?
Inevitably you can't stop it.  As population increases, there will be greater need for "development."  It is very important to have good government control.

2. Agricultural chemicals in regards to their use in crops and the ecosystem?
These are very harmful to the environment, and even harmful for consumption.  There should be stringent control by the government.

3. The usage of genetically engineered foods and food additives?
Definitely a "No No."  A lot on cancer causing agents are found in food additives.

4. The waste and use of natural resources in the consumerism of the United States?
This is really wasteful.  Millions are starving out there.

Hope this helps.

Take care.
