Question
Hi, my question is pertaining to requirements of Buddhism, are there any? Also i am very confused on the idea of loving someone, without being emotionally attached? How is that possible?

Answer
Hi Kyle,
The "requirements" for a lay Buddhist are very simple, although the exact interpretation depends on the lineage and particular teacher you are connected to. Usually they call for you to train yourself away from killing, stealing, intoxication, lying and "sexual misconduct". I put the quotes around that, as the meaning depends so much on the culture you live in and the people concerned.
Of course, you can go on to a lot more. You can take more vows, study and learn more, do mind-cultivation practices like meditation and so on. Step by step, of course.
As for loving without being attached - tricky. But you can work on it!
I hope that helps at least a little.
Best wishes

Expertise

I have practiced and studied Tibetan Buddhism in the Kagyu and Nyingma traditions since the early 1970s, and have a good knowledge of theory, history and of the struggles of trying to practice the teachings, including meditation, while leading a normal, modern life. I am also available to provide background information for journalists.

Experience

I have been a practitioner since the early 1970s; have run a small Buddhist centre in the English Midlands and was vice-president of Kagyu Benchen Ling e.V. in Germany, for whom I managed three large Buddhist summer-camps. More importantly, I maintain a habit of personal practice. I am the "owner" of the Kagyu list at Yahoo.

Education/Credentials
My first degree was an M.A. from Oxford. I later obtained a Master of Philosophy degree for a research thesis in "Initiation in Tibetan Buddhism" from Leicester University. I also have engineering and educational qualifications.
