Question
Hello!

I have read that HH the Dalai Lama has condemned Capitalism and he has declared Marxist. Then, muy question is: Tibetan Buddhists of the four schools -for example: a Kagyupa, Sakyapa...- should be Marxists too? And, another question: Is the Dalai Lama the head of all Tibetan Buddhism or only the head of the Gelugpa school?

Thank you very much!

Answer
Dear DB,

Has he? Marxism has a lot to be said for it, although of course it was badly misused by Russian and other dictators. I think the Dalai Lama also sees the benefits of capitalism, although we all know it has many faults too. But anyway...

Of course not. And even if the Dalai Lama does support Marxism (as I say, I'm not sure), that would not make this opinion binding on the Gelugpas either.

Not at all, though more-or-less all Tibetan Buddhists have very great respect for him.

> or only the head of the Gelugpa school?
He's not even that, strictly speaking, although he is a key figure.

I hope that helps a bit

Expertise

I have practiced and studied Tibetan Buddhism in the Kagyu and Nyingma traditions since the early 1970s, and have a good knowledge of theory, history and of the struggles of trying to practice the teachings, including meditation, while leading a normal, modern life. I am also available to provide background information for journalists.

Experience

I have been a practitioner since the early 1970s; have run a small Buddhist centre in the English Midlands and was vice-president of Kagyu Benchen Ling e.V. in Germany, for whom I managed three large Buddhist summer-camps. More importantly, I maintain a habit of personal practice. I am the "owner" of the Kagyu list at Yahoo.

Education/Credentials
My first degree was an M.A. from Oxford. I later obtained a Master of Philosophy degree for a research thesis in "Initiation in Tibetan Buddhism" from Leicester University. I also have engineering and educational qualifications.
