Buddhists/contraception and buddhism
Expert: John Willemsens aka Advayavadananda - 1/26/2011
QuestionHi, I know contraception is a controversial subject in many cultures, but I am trying to become a practicing Buddhist, starting with my everyday choices in life. I have come across some information on Buddhist views of contraception, but I am still not clear on how I can make the most positive choices in my own life.
My partner is an atheist, so he does not have any specific views, except that it is not fair to have another child unless we have the time and money to care for them properly (we already have a wonderful son). I know that many people say Buddhists believe life begins after the egg is fertilized, so coils would be inappropriate, as they would destroy a life, but since we do not feel able to support a child right now, and we wish to show each other intimate affection, what would you suggest is most appropriate?
Sorry in advance if this question is inappropriate or rude.
AnswerHello T,
I personally believe that contraception is a perfectly appropriate decision to take when the circumstances indicate it and that the coil and the pill are both very adequate birth control methods for the purpose. The two pillars of Buddhism are your compassion and your wisdom and the path to follow in your lives is the Middle Way as you understand it. That is what makes you a practicing Buddhist.
