Buddhists/The Influence of Buddha

Question
Is Buddha capable of continuing to influence our world? I'm told that he is, but then that would sort of defeat the purpose of becoming a Bodhisattva wouldn't it? I always thought he was completely detached from this world, and, in that way, he is no longer capable of "contact." Is this true? (Although I'm a Mahayana Buddhist, feel free to answer from either the Theravada or Mahayana viewpoints.)

Answer
Hi Tony,

I take it that you are referring to Gotama Buddha.  As you know in the Theravada tradition, any previous Buddha for that matter is dead and gone.  The Buddha existed not for the purpose to influence the world.  The Buddha became enlightened during his final life here in this world, and we are fortunate that he imparted his knowledge to us.  This world by its very nature is an imperfect world.  That is why the Buddha pointed out that existence in this world is unsatisfactory.  If we want to be free from this unsatisfactoriness, then we need to get away from this world.

The only factor that can influence our lives as Buddhists is the Dhamma, the teachings of the Buddha, especially on the realities of existence.

Well, this is my 2-cents worth.

Take care.
