Question
I was born into being a Theravada Buddhist and was taught disrespecting elders and believeing misbehaved children who treat their parents rudely are punished by having the same fate done unto themselves. So I told my parents " Well then you should've treated my grandparents better." Its really unfair when my parents are too lazy get themselves a cup of water when your not even near the kitchen.

Answer
Hi Bo,

Kamma is universal.  Action and reaction.  No one needs to threaten you with the concept of kamma.  If you fully understand the working of kamma, it is good enough for you to think and do the right action.

Respect for elders is also a universal value.  If you want to lead a harmless and noble life, then the concept of kamma and respect for elders can be used as guiding priniples for your life.  What ever your parents may say, the ultimate fate of your life is in your own hands.

Take care.
