Buddhists/Pharmacy

Question
Hello. I am a 4th-year pharmacy student and am undergoing a project to promote cultural awareness in pharmacy. I was wondering if you could tell me or send me information on what medicines (if any) are prohibited under dukkha law or other Buddhist restrictions. My instructor and I were also curious about products such as insulin that are derived from bovine or porcine sources. Please tell me information in general that you use in Buddhist society to determine if a medicine or therapy is taboo.

Thank you for your help in this matter. My goal is to complile a concise reference that can be used by all pharmacies that shows proper respect for cultural and religious differences. Thanks again for your time and advice.

Sincerely,

Shawn O.

Answer
Hi Shawn,

Buddhism is different from other religions.  It does not set laws and commandments on its followers.  Buddhism is about contentment and inner peace.  Taboos, superstitions and prohibitions are not condoned by Buddhist teachings.  If the product is derived by non-harmful means, then there is nothing to worry for the Buddhists.  Buddhists are encouraged to use their common sense and human intelligence to live a harmless and peaceful life.

Hope this helps.
