Question
Hi, I am looking for some basic information about different yoga traditions. I wonder - how do Buddhist yogic practice and meditation differ from traditional Hindu yoga? Do they have common roots?

Answer
Good morning Casey,

"Yoga" to the general public usually means the form of physical exercises.  "Yoga" actually means "union", usually extended to mean union with the supreme, or god, or whatever higher power that you may believe.  A "yogi" means a spiritual person.  So you see, it depends on what you mean to get appropriate answers.

Buddhism in this sense has not much to do with yoga.  Buddhism is about how to experience inner peace through the practice of Buddhist meditation.  Indian society has countless types of yoga practices, some concentrate on physical exercise and breathing methods, while others simply means mind development, or a mixture of both.  You may consider all to have emphasis on mind development to achieve peace and health; for a peaceful mind will also result in a healthy body.

Expertise

All your questions will be answered, and you may not have to agree with the answers. Such is the beauty of Buddhism. I follow the Theravada tradition, and have been studying Buddhism for more than 50 years. As I am not a Buddhist scholar, I answer in simple language, and I prefer answering general questions rather than textual.

Experience

I was brought up in the 50's as a Buddhist. For the past 50 years I have read numerous books on Buddhism and listened to numerous talks on Buddhism by well-respected and learned monks and lay teachers. I have conducted Buddhist classes for parents of Sunday School children in a Theravada Buddhist Temple. My teacher was the late Chief Reverend, The Ven. K Sri Dhammananda of The Brickfields Buddhist Mahavihara, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
