Buddhists/3 Basic Questions

Question
Hi, my name is Bianca and I am currently enrolled in an
online class, which deals with the differing philosophies
and beliefs of the East and West. We need to conduct an
interview with a devout Buddhist, and I was wondering if
you could help me.

What do you believe is the most central and significant idea
in Buddhism?

Is there one Buddhist work that greatly influenced or
impacted you the most? Why?

Do you think the modern world does an adequate job in
educating non-Buddhist followers in the philosophies of
Buddhism, or would you like to see more people become
well versed in Buddhism?

Thank you so much for your time.
Bianca

Answer
Hi Bianca,

Thank you for asking me.

Looks like a group of you have been asking about similar questions.  But never mind, I shall answer your questions.

Your qn:What do you believe is the most central and significant idea in Buddhism?
Answer: Buddhists are encouraged to think for themselves by using their common sense and human intelligence.  This is the freedom given by the Buddha for us to live a free life without fear of persecution.  Buddhism is based on universal truths which transcend race, nationality, culture, and time and space.  It concerns the understanding of the true nature of existence.

Your qn:
Is there one Buddhist work that greatly influenced or
impacted you the most? Why?
Answer: I don't quite understand your question.  The central theme of Buddhism is compassion and non-violence.  This is the most important aspect of the Buddha's teachings.  There is no bloodshed in the name of the Buddha.
As Buddhists we cherish peace and tolerance.  The Buddha's message is about how to experience peace and happiness.

Your qn:Do you think the modern world does an adequate job in educating non-Buddhist followers in the philosophies of
Buddhism, or would you like to see more people become
well versed in Buddhism?
Answer: Of course I would like to see more people being aware of the Buddha's teachings.  This will reduce the violence in this world; and also will benefit more people to experience inner peace and happiness.  As the communications become faster and more universal people will have more opportunities to learn Buddhism.  The current trend is that the western world is now more aware of Buddhism.  I was told that Australia has now the fastest growing Buddhist population.
