Question
why would one do this?  Better put, what is the value or purpose of it?  If to end
suffering, why end suffering?

Hi Andrew,

The Bodhisatta vow is a Mahayana concept where the person is supposed to postponed his final liberation in order to help all others achieve liberation.  "Suffering" in the Buddhist context takes on a deeper meaning.  When there is birth there is inevitable death.  And throughout the cycle of births and deaths, beings wallow in the whirlpool of suffering.  When a being is caught in this cycle, there is no escape.  To break away from this cycle is to end suffering.

By the way,I follow the Theravada tradition.
