Question
Joe,

I am trying to prepare for a test and seem to have run into a little difficuly with a question from the textbook.

Which non-chinese traditions of thought do you believe are the closest to the spirit of Chinese Confusionism and Daoism? Why? and What are some of the Major Similarities and Differences ?

Any help on the topic matter would be greatly appriciated.

Thank you, Megan.

Answer
Dear Megan,
I don't know enough about all of the world's ethical systems and religions to give you a good answer here.  I would think that some of the religions of the Native Americans might parallel the ideas of harmony with nature that Taoism incorporates.  Confucianism is an ethical system and not a religion.  You might be able to compare that and some of the ethical teachings of Christianity and Judaism.  A google search of these comparisons might help you.
Sorry I could not be of more help.

I can answer questions dealing with Taoist philosophy and Zen and not the historicity and religion of Buddhism and its different schools. I studied under Dr. Richard DeMartino and Masao Abe of the Kyoto School of Zen.
