Is there a general Buddhist view on fertility treatment?

Hi Isobel,

Thank you for asking me.  My apologies for the dealyed reply due to website problem.

The Buddha was only interested to show us the way of truth and how to live in peace and rid of sorrows.  Fertility treatment, and for that matter any other scientific experimentations are purely mundane in nature.  All these worldly experimentations and discoveries are the results of human intelligence.  However, there is always this danger of cleverness without wisdom or moral principles.  That is why we have weapons of mass destruction.  The Buddha actually encouraged us to use our common sense and human intelligence to live a noble and happy life.  There is so much science can do to help us improve our worldly lives.  There is nothing wrong with all the positive discoveries and scientific achievements such as DNA research, fertility treatment, "enhancement" surgery and many others.  It is only harmful when man does not use his wisdom and moral principles.  It is just like fire, a good servant but a very dangerous master.

I was brought up in the 50's as a Buddhist. For the past 40 years I have read numerous books on Buddhism and listened to numerous talks on Buddhism by well-respected and learned monks and lay teachers.
