Buddhists/Letting go or Stuffing

Question
Hello,
I have been reading and intermittently practicing for about three years now, and have recently began a more serious and dedicated practice.  I have be delighted at the amount of release that meditation has given me with regard to disturbing thoughts and emotions.  I have noticed recently thought that these emotions seem to be resurfacing with amazing intensity.  My question is how can I know when I am "stuffing" emotions as opposed to just noticing them and letting them go.  I fear that I may be avoiding issues that may need further investigation and/or resolution.  Thank You,
Jim

Answer
Dear Jim
I think this is one for your meditation instructor. If you haven't got one - learn meditation again off someone who is there for regular meditation interviews - as this is part of the process...It is difficult for me to say anything relevant for you as we do not know each other well.

In general I would say that Buddhist meditation is not some psychotherapy that will deal with emotional problems, although the exchanges between Western psychology and meditation traditions are not without their interest and promise. The motivation for Buddhists in approaching meditation is quite different from Western psychology however . Really in meditation the play of feelings and emotions in the mind during meditation is no more interesting than children playing in the street outside your house. It is neither good or bad really. Insight into the nature of the awareness is more interesting perhaps.

I wish you well Jim. Keep practicing beyond hope and fear!
