Hello,

In a few days, I'm going to a Buddhist Temple in New York City, and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do there.  I've only been a Buddhist for a few months, and where I live, I don't have the luxury of a temple nearby.  I'm not sure of the ettiquite and how I pray and show respect there.  My family is also coming, and they are not Buddhists, so will they be welcome?  Also, I understand the Sangha appreciate offerings.  What do you suggest I bring for them?

         Thank you,
         Dan
Answer -
Hello Dan,
Much depends on the Buddhist tradition the Temple belongs to. But the temple is there for you (and your parents). Just take off your shoes when entering, speak in a soft voice and be courteous to everybody, and everything will be ok. Just enjoy the experience. Sorry for the delay in answering. I was in Barcelona at the Parliament of the World s Religions.
Kind regards,
Advayavadananda.

Hello,

Thanks for the reply.  I believe the temple is a Mahayana temple.  Is there anything else I should know?

         Thanks,
         Dan

Answer
Hello Dan,
I am sure there is, but take your time in learning it there. That is part of the experience. If it is not done explicitly in the temple, mentally take the threefold refuge (in the Buddha, in the Dharma and the Sangha) when there. There is a lot on the threefold refuge on the internet.
Kind regards,
Advayavadananda.
