Buddhists/fornication today
Expert: Bodhicitta - 9/3/2006
QuestionHi there,
According to your knowledge and beliefs what is your stance about fornication today? Do you still consider it a horrible sin or is it not an issue anymore since today we have better use of contraceptives, and we have genetic tests to prove whose kid is whos etc....
i can understand its problem in the older days, but not today. I think times have changed too greatly so it is surprising that most followers of the world's religions whether jewish, chrisian, muslim, hindu,etc..insist on how sinful it is (whether they do it or not) and do not really question whether such a rule still applies today or not (which may be called blind faith if one doesnt question)...i would like to know your views and beliefs and perhaps learn something from you
ps: im an arab muslim, greatly influenced by eastern religions and philosophies, i practice yoga...and try to be spiritual
AnswerDear Doudi
Buddhists take different vows depending on the life style
they choose to adhere to. Monks or Nuns may take many vows including one that is total abstenance from sex. The lay person would normally take the minimum of five vows. One of these vows is to not abuse people through sexual misconduct. This is pretty much universal in Buddhism.
The question really is what "abusing people through sexual
misconduct" means? There is here a matter of cultural and personal interpretation. But the minimum I would say is that is commenly agreed on is no aggression is involved, and that there is consent. It would also normally be said that local customs and laws be respected. An example of this may be age
consent .Ultimately
these questions are personal but guidance may be given by Buddhist
teachers and lineages. Different traditions say different things about these questions.
Buddhism is largely a path towards truth using meditation. Awakening or enlightenment emerges along the path.
The rules of Buddhism are to aid the practioner on this path. The rules are not the truth. This is an important point. Buddhahood is said to be beyond
rules and conventions. But this far beyond ordinary beings such as our selves.
I wish you well with your practice of yoga and path
