Questionhi there
i have been on a self improvement path for over 30 yrs and have done several course in kadampa incl mahamudra tantra and wonder what the buddhist stance is on masturbation...is it viewed as a skillful or nonskillful action?this is a serious question............i appreciate that attachment in all forms is a hindrance on the path but the higher yoga teachings incorporate sex ,visualised and with an actual consort, in the quest for enlightenment
hope to hear back from you
yours faithfully peter
AnswerHi Peter
Well this is a question for your Buddhist teacher really- if you are following tantra and mahamudra you should have a qualified Lama and not be afraid to talk to him.
But I can give you a general answer. It depends really what
rules of training you are following. If you were a monk or nun the Vinaya rules do talk about masturbation in a section
euphimistically headed "intentional emission - not in a dream" . The rules are rather strict and advise you
should confess in front of the whole sangha. Personally
I feel if that was followed the Sangha might be in permanent
session.
If you have taken the five precepts when you took refuge- which is probably the
case if you are a lay practionner. The relevant rule is
not to abuse others sexually. I think clearly this rule
does not apply to masturbation. Another rule is about
addiction to alcohol. Well one could with a small extension
think that addiction to anything might not be a good thing.
So if you were obsessed with masturbation that would be
something you should train yourself out of. If necessary
by discussing it with a senior buddhist or teacher.
If you have taken the Bodhisattva vows and precepts
then there are commentaries that say you should do
everything to help sentient beings no matter what
the personal cost. I think this does not apply
to masturbation.
There are of course different rules of training for the tantras. For these you must discuss this with your
tantric preceptor. But in general sexual yoga is
only for very highly realised beings and not for beginners
such as ourselves - so again that does not apply.
So I would advise you that it , like so many things in Buddhism is a question of moderation and common sense.
Here as ever you need to use your own judgement and see
whether masturbation for you if an obstacle to practicing
meditation and the path. If it is then speak to a teacher.
Hope this helps
