Budget Travel/Can someone buy my ticket for me?

Question
Hello,

I am currently living in London but plan to come back to the US (Chicago) this spring.

A friend wanted to know if he could purchase a ticket for me from an American website and send it to me. Do you know if this is possible? If so, would this mean he'd be able to pay the American prices which are inevitably cheaper than those quoted on English Sites? (It could be a return ticket or one way whichever would be least expensive.)

Somehow I think this is unlikely, (and possibly illegal) but if you know for sure, it would be extremely helpful.

Thank you!
Ellen

Answer
Hi Ellen and Happy Holidays....

My favorite Airline, American Airlines,  tells me:

No problem....your friend can buy your ticket online so long as he has a U.S. billing address and uses a U.S. Credit card. He then sends (emails) you the E (electronic) Ticket made out in your name.

If you have a U.S. Billing address YOU can likewise buy the ticket online. But NOT if you have a UK billing address. He can call American at 800-433-7300 to further discuss and/or confirm  any or all of this.

Hope this helps. Steve Tanenbaum
