Answer There are a few home remedies; but I can save you the trouble of trying them because I've never seen one work.
Over the counter remedies are notoriously unreliable. The pet store will tell you "it works!" but keep in mind they make money if you buy it, whether or not it works. The so called medications you can buy over the counter are usually very weak avian antibiotics. There is no need to buy "mite protectors". They're very common in pet stores, but can actually do more harm than good. Some mite repellents contain mothball-like compounds that can be toxic to birds or may even cause liver cancer.
The best remedy is a powder you can get from a vet. Its pretty cheap, or at least cheaper than buying a dozen methods that don't work. It has always worked for me.
