Subject: Is it inexperience?

Question
I have a nest box in my birds cage, and the female spends at least an hour or two in there everyday, but no eggs. Also I have seen my two budgies get excited and they have tried to mate, but the male can't seem to stay on the female, he keeps falling off. Will this be over in time, or is it a problem?

Answer
Its possible its just from inexperience.  Birds are often a bit clumsy when they mate, and falling off is normal.  Sometimes they just have "personal issues".  My birds are very funny: if I watch them mate, they immediately stop and act normally, and once I go away, they start again!  They will get it right eventually.  The nesting behavior is encouraging, and you'll probably have eggs soon, but keep an eye on them to make sure they're not eggbound!

Keep me posted!
