Question
Hi
I was wondering, are there any bugs found in South Africa that could be harmful to budgies? How can i prevent them

Answer
Hi, Marthella.

Well, I don't know anything about bugs of South Africa, but I'd say there are most likely many that could be harmful to budgies considering there are many bugs in the USA that can be harmful to budgies.  Prevention would depend on the type(s) of bugs that might be bothering your birds.  In other words, certain types of remedies would depend on the type(s) of bugs involved...some bugs respond to one type of deterrant and other don't respond to that deterrant at all.  What you're going to have to do is determine the type of bug(s) involved and find out what remedy works on that particular type of bug(s).

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems, nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact a certified avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
