Answer
Hi, Marthella.

What species of parrot are you making a play gym for?  If a smaller bird such as a parakeet or cockatiel or small conure, you can start with a base made of wood and use different size dowel rods and/or tree limbs as the play area/perches (you can purchase dowel rods at most hardware stores and you can trim them to the size you want).  You can hang different types of toys from the wood dowel rods.  You can glue the dowel rods in place or use a drill and screw the dowel rods into place from the bottom of the wood base.  There's all sorts of different types of play gyms you can make out of wood if you're creative and handy enough with wood.  PVC is also an alternate and can easily be cut with a saw.  PVC is cleaned/disinfected easily.  You can actually purchase play gyms fairly reasonably priced at most pet shops or bird fairs, etc.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems, nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact a certified avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
