Question I'm not sure why my parakeets are biting each other. one day, i hear loud rustling and cheeping sounds coming from my room, i look in, and they are attacking eachother! they are both male and female, so i don't get why they fight!my friend says they are in love, and its love biting, but they seem to knock eachother off the ropes, and bite hard and bat the other with their wings. HELP!
Answer Hi, Nataschia.
Sounds to me like these 2 birds don't like each other. Are you sure they are male and female? Males have blue ceres and females have white/brown/beige/tan ceres. Sounds more like 2 males or even more like 2 females. Some fighting/bickering/arguing is normal between 2 birds caged together. It's breeding season so their hormones are probably raging...this is most likely why they are fighting. Depending on how badly they are fighting, you may need to separate these 2 birds before one of them ends up hurting or even killing the other. Perhaps after their hormones settle down some you can put them back together again. Sometimes it helps to put 2 fighting birds in a larger cage, but this depends on the situation and the individual birds involved.
I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems, nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact a certified avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
