Question
My budgie was trying to lay an egg but its stuck inside her! She is bleeding and shaking! I think she is going to die and I am so scared. The nearest vert place is very far away (Im in the country) please tell me how I can save my budgie

Answer
Hi, Talia,

The only way you can save your budgie is to get the bird to a certified avian vet NOW.  Do not hesitate or your bird will die.  This cannot wait until tomorrow...you have to get this bird to a vet or animal emergency clinic ASAP, as in TODAY.  Birds get egg bound when they don't have enough calcium in their bodies and they try to lay a soft shelled egg.  They can't lay soft shelled eggs because the shell is soft and they can't push it out.  This is an emergency situation for your bird.  There is nothing you can do to help this bird.  If you try and the egg breaks, the bird will die.  The bird will die if you don't get it to the bird vet.

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems, nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact a certified avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
