Question
HI,
WE BOUGHT A BUDGIE LAST WEEK APROXIMATLY 8 WEEKS OLD,EVERYTHING SEEMED TO BE GOING WELL UNTIL THIS MORNING, I FOUND HIM DEAD IN THE CAGE. THE DAY BEFORE HE DIED HE WAS THE MOST ACTIVE HE HAD EVER BEEN,HE SEEMED TO BE COMMING AROUND TO HIS NEW HOME. DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS AS TO WHAT MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED

Answer
Hi, Lynn.  Thanks for posting!

I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

If this baby was just 8 weeks old and you bought it just last week, I'd say this bird was most likely ill when you purchased the bird.  Did you get some type of health guarantee when you purchased the bird?  If so, I'd be contacting the place where you purchased the bird from and explain to them what happened.

I couldn't even begin to guess what might have been wrong with your bird because there are MANY reasons why this bird could have died.  An avian veterinarian can perform a necropsy on the bird in order to try and determine why it died, but you'd need to take the bird to the vet within 48 hours of it's death.

Expertise

I`ve been raising/breeding/handfeeding/selling parrots for over 20 years (parakeets/budgies, cockatiels, 6 subspecies of conures, parrotlets, amazons, lovebirds, etc.). I've been published in "Budgies" and "Cockatiels" offered by Bow Tie Productions, and have written avian articles for publication in England. I can provide advice in raising healthy birds, handfeeding/weaning babies, some health problems, nail/beak/wing clipping, general husbandry, etc. I also have experience with racing/showing homing pigeons. I cannot diagnose specific illness over this website. If you suspect your bird is ill or if you have an emergency, contact a certified avian veterinarian or emergency pet clinic ASAP.
