If Spike has no soul, how does he love Buffy?

Buffy says the same thing during "Crush" in Season 5. Spike knocked both her and Drusilla out, and when they came to, he threatens to kill Drusilla for Buffy if she will admit that one day she will love him, too. Buffy says, "You can't love without a soul!" Drusilla replies, "Oh, we can, very well." The "love" I suppose they are speaking of is infatuation. However, during the episode, "Seeing Red", Spike tries to rape Buffy. He realizes later that was not right - and goes through trials to get his soul back, and makes it. I think the metaphor in there was, even people who are considered "bad" can love; and Spike was already a very sensitive man and vampire later when Dru sired him. He's a little bit different than the other ones.
