Question
Dear Mr. Weldin,

I'm buying a new home in Houston, TX. Before sheetrock was installed, I saw some air ducts in the ceiling were constricted by many electrical wires running and contacting across them. Please see evident photos in this link for more details www.dzidzom.com/construction_issues/air%20duct%20issues

I'd like to ask for your advice about this issue. Do these installation of electrical wire and air duct violate building code? Please advise!

I look forward to hearing from your earliest response.

Best regards,
Duke Pham

Answer
Duke:

Which came first, the duct or the wiring?

I don't know of any Code requirement that would prohibit the installation. The workmanship does violate the intent of the Industry Standard for Installation of Flexible Duct: Air Diffusion Council's "Flexible Duct Performance & Installation Standards"; they intend to maintain the round shape of the ducts, without restricting the internal diameter.

See askweldin.com for info on flex installation.

JPEG's 3 & 4 indicate a good deal of "compression", check that at the website. I always say the only things that should touch the flex are its connections and supports.

Fred
