Building Codes and Inspections/code for waterheater strapping

Question
What is the code for the strapping for a water heater?  I thought it was two straps that went completely around the water heater.  Is there more?

Answer
Strapping of the heater is usually seismic bracing that's only required in some areas. You should check with your local building official who can advise you on the local codes where the installation is located, as codes differ by area.

Section P2801.7 of the 2009 ICC International Residential Code requires strapping at both the top 1/3 and the bottom 1/3 of the heater to resist lateral forces equal to 1/3 of the weight of the filled heater, or in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. It does not say how to anchor it, just that it has to be anchored.
