Building Codes and Inspections/exterior entry/step

Question
We are contemplating tiling over our existing back patio/breezeway. There is currently a three inch high landing at the door before the breezeway. Is there a standard measurement for this landing as well as any other standards we need to take into consideration? Thank you for any assistance you can offer.

Answer
Building code requirements are generally location specific, so be sure to check with the Building Code Official in the municipality in which the building is located. Landings are usually required unless less than two steps, which sounds like the case with your conditions. My suggestion is to try and either make a step or eliminated the 3" lip completely, as that seems like a tripping hazard. Regulations will indicate a maximum riser height which doesn't seems to be an issue in your case.
