Depending on your climate, you may not be permitted to have single wall vent pipe in the unconditioned attic.  The reason is because the heat loss to the cold attic will inhibit proper draft, and condensation (water) might run back down the sides of your heater and rust it out.  Appliances must be installed in accordance with their listing, which is the manufacturer's installation instructions.  Listed chimney section have the required clearances to combustibles noted on them.
