I have done a major remodel taking my home from 940 sqft to 1800 sqft. My wife hired an exterior guy to put up some siding. He would not do a contract. He did a horrible job, not to code and very sloppy craftsmanship. his bill was $2000 over what we expected. When we asked for a shipping bill, we received one that had "that days" date on it and there was numerous charges that were incorrect, most notably a charge for 5 cases of caulk (12 tubes to a case). We do not have enough square footage to use that much caulk. After one of his employees called and visited my wife while I was at work and intimidated her, I made an arrangement with him that I would sue if this continued. I paid him $500 for the supplies and on the phone, he and I agreed that the situation was complete. He cashed the check. Last week I received a notice that he put a Lien on my house for around $2800 (fees included). I will not pay this person. Can you detail my options?

Wow, these are the kind of jerks that give legitimate
contractors a bad name!!
I am in Maine, and it is illegal to do a job for someone for more than $1500.00 without a contract. I hope you have
a similar law.
I would first threaten him with a lawsuit for that as well as harrassing my wife!! Indicate that you have seen a lawyer and that you DO have a case. If that doesn't work,
You may need to seek legal advice. Make sure you take a lot of pictures of any work that is even remotely questionable and make copies of any bills, slips etc.
Unfortunately, you may not be able to collect for attorneys fees, but I would surely try.
If there are local codes that he didn't follow, there must be a code enforcement officer available. Contact your local town/city hall and find this out.
