Building Homes or Extensions/Load Bearing Beam

Question
I am looking at having a portion of my attic converted into a storage area.  There is a load bearing beam (2 2x4 nailed together) that goes up to the roof.  My contractor has discussed taking this out and replacing it by running 2 2x4s lengthwise on the second level and then sending the support beam up from this point.  (My attic has two levels...one even with my second story and then the upper level)  My concern is there will not be enough support...am I wrong?  Is this a proper way to replace a support beam?

Answer
Kelly,
I'm sorry, I'm not sure I understand your description.  I don't think I have ever seen a 2 story attic.

It sounds as if you are describing some type of vertical post that helps the ridge beam of the rafters.  If this is a typical gable cut roof (not truss), the rafters push against each other and do not require a vertical prop.  It may have been installed during construction to help carry the ridge before the rafters and just never pulled out.  If this is a strong back at mid span of the rafters that is braced to the walls, it is functional.

What shape roof do you have? Gable, gambrel, Hip, Mansard.
How tall is the original 2 2x4 post? (About, like 2', 4', 20')
What size lumber are the rafters? (2x4, 2x6, 2x8, etc)
What does the original post push on at its top?
What does the original post push on at its bottom?
Is this attic on top of one story, two story, or a cathedral ceiling?

If the original is pushing on a double top plate on the top of a stud wall, it sounds as if the contractor is wanting to remove the bottom half (?) of the post and replace the bottom bearing on a double 2x4.  What is carrying the double 2x4 that the contractor wants as bearing?  How far is this thing spanning?

I'm sorry I can't see the issue.  Maybe something I said will make sense, if not - please ask again.
