Building Homes or Extensions/Metal chimney facades

Question
I have a wood stove in my Hudson Valley, NY home that is the sole heat source.  Anticipating installation solar photovoltaic panels makes me desire to reduce the shadow of the 18" square chimney.  Presently it is framed.  I assume that it is double walled SS inside, but have not yet had a chance to verify this.  Ideally, I would like to use native stone as a facade, though expect that if the idea is to come to fruition, it would require use of faux stone on a non-combustible substrate.  Are you aware of any details that might be available in assisting me in the design of this project for my residence?  Perhaps a circular masonry base with faux stone adhered?  One of my concerns is how a circular stone chimney would appear, as I do not ever recall seeing one.  Thanks

Answer
Hi James,
I have used cultured stone on both flat (square) and round
faces. Larger "stones" are harder to work with on a small radius...
I usually use a wire mesh closely attached to whatever is used for the backing. A thin coat of (manufacturers recommended) adhesive is applied then the stones are used.
I strongly suggest starting from the top and working down..this prevents adhesives/mortar from falling on finished work.
Best of luck, and if this isn't enough...mail me
Dave
