Building Homes or Extensions/basement floor

Question
My house was built in 1949.  Half of the basement floor is concrete and half is brick.  The bricks are uneven.  I would like to level this floor and make an additional room, as now the basement is all open area.  What can I do, and do I have to remove the brick?  Thanks!

Answer
A concrete floor needs to be about 4" thick.  When the floor is finished, I suspect you want to have it at the same height as the existing concrete.  This will determine whether you need to remove the brick.  The major work will be getting the brick out? and getting the concrete in.

Look very hard at adding a sump pit and pump as well as perimeter sub floor drainage.  It is certainly easier before the concrete is poured.
