Question
QUESTION: HI mike, i am finishing my basement and i would like to remove a telepost to add to my layout options. Do i need to get a structural engineer involved or can i go to the lumberyard and buy a laminated beam(or steel Ibeam).I have to span 28 feet.

ANSWER: Hi Trevor,

28 feet is a long span. I would get an engineer involved. This span is probably too much.

QUESTION: Hello again Mike, i have to correct myself, I asked you if i could buy a beam that would span 28 feet so i could remove a telepost in my basement. The measurement i gave you is wrong I meant to say 18 feet. Does this make a difference or should i still get an engineer involved?          thanks for all your help.

Answer
This does make a difference as it should now be possible. I would still go with steel. I use an engineer all the time to keep the building dept. quiet.
If it helps, most standard double garages are 18' wide and generally have a 10" or 12" I beam carrying the second floor.
