Building Homes or Extensions/french doors

Question
I am replacing a sliding glass door with french doors that lead to our deck. I recently heard on a house flipping show, that it is a violation to have outward swinging doors onto a deck. Is this correct?
Thanks

Answer
Eric,

you may be referring to International Residential Code (IRC) R311.4.3, which requires certain landings at exterior doors, and has different provisions for outswinging doors.

If your deck is at least 3' wide (in the direction of travel) and is no more than 7-3/4" below your door threshold, then outswinging doors are permitted.  If either of these criteria aren't met, your new doors would violate the IRC.

(Note that the IRC is in effect in most areas, but you could be an exception.  Call your local building office to check on applicable codes for your project.)

Good luck.  -Ted
