Building Homes or Extensions/2x8 headers max span

Question
Can I use 2 2x8 (side-by-side) inch headers to span a total of 76 inchs on an interior load bearing wall? Or must I use a larger header?
Thank you

Answer
Hi Jerry, a rule of thumb for headers is one inch of thickness per foot of span so in your case 76" is just a little over 6' so a 4x8 header or a double 2x8 header is sufficient (an 8" header should be good for up to 8' of span).  I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
