Building Homes or Extensions/Installing a oak Beam

Question
Hi,

I am a building surveying student and have an assignment in structural method. I would like to know how to install an oak beam 250 x 250 by span of 5m approx into a two story house. The beam will support the first floor which has got bounce.

I know that a hole will have to be made slightly below the floor an the beam inserted. But what type of equipment is used and what are the stages involved.

Also how would an existing beam be removed in order to replace it.

Any help would be appreciated as my assignment is handed in this week.

Thanks

Andrew Brewer

Answer
Hi Andrew, I can help you with your problem but I need more information.  First of all: you are supporting the first floor joists with the beam?  So you need to get under the house to add the beam?  If so how much crawl space is available and how is the existing floor system supported?  What kind of floor joists make up the first floor system?  What size beam are you trying to replace?  Please respond and I can flesh out the information you need..sincerely bruce e johnson..
