Building Homes or Extensions/Pole Barn Repair

Question
Hello Bruce,

How to I replace or repair treated poles in a 30x40 pole barn that are rotting out at ground level? The barn is probably 40 years old.

Thanks,

Nancy

Answer
Hi Nancy, it depends on how the poles are installed.  If the poles are embedded into holes filled with concrete then you have a problem that is not easily solved.  Either you have to cut the pole up about five feet, remove that section of pole, remove that concrete filled post hole, add a new section of pole and repour the concrete.  Then you need to scab the two pieces of  pole together either with metal bands, metal straps or wood cleats.

Another option is to add a pole and a concrete filled hole as close as possible to the bad poles and then attach the barn siding to the new pole and leave the old pole in place.

Without actually seeing your particular type of construction it is hard to give much more information.  I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
