Building Homes or Extensions/Support Columns

Question
I would like to widen the distance between the support columns in my basement. The beam is a W8X21 with a trib width of 15 feet supporting a 1-story ranch w/no load bearing walls. The columns are now evenly spaced at 13' but if moved to 15' I can hide one in a wall. I know new piers would need to be poured, but just want to make sure I'm reading the structural tables correctly (DL20/LL40).

Answer
Hi Paul, you should be okay.  Worst case scenario would be a little more bounce in the floor system.  This bounce can be offset with another row of bridging between the joists preferably over the beam if you don't have one already at at mid span between the beam and outside walls..I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
