Building Homes or Extensions/frost line

Question
If the frost line is at 30 inches, Where should the bottom of my 12" thick footer lay, at the frost line or 12" below the frost line?

Answer
Hi bob, the top of the footing should be at the frost line and the footing below it.  That is my opinion and the reasoning is: The frost line is the accepted elevation to which the ground will potentially freeze during a typical winter. I would prefer my footing to be sitting on unfrozen ground as opposed to sitting on possible frozen ground.  How your local building codes interpret the matter and what is accepted in your area may differ from my opinion however.   I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsonconsulting.com
