how does the roof support itself when fitting a wraparound dormer into a double hip roof
Graham, I don't know what a double hip roof is. If I do understand what you are asking, you will need to brace the ridge during the rework and may need to design the brace permanently if the dormer framing does not balance the loads.
It sounds like you will need to work with a framer or structural engineer in your area that can see the issues. I wish I could have been of more help.
