Question
Hi,we are looking to extend our lounge downstairs and would like to knock a wall through of about 14 ft.wide.bearing in mind the wall is supporting the bedroom. We wondered if this can be supported in any way and so that it doesn't look like a bit added on to the lounge. Many thanks

Answer
Hi helen, without knowing all the details I would have to say yes, it probably can be done if you have enough room in the existing floor joists to "bury" a carrying beam.  In other words you put the beam up inside the floor system and then hang the floor system on the side of the beam using joist hangers instead of the joists sitting on top of the beam (or in this case on top of where the wall used to be).  I hope this information helps feel free to write again regarding this or other matters, sincerely bruce e johnson..bejohnsoconsulting.com
